  3. Vero Beach Mainland

Overview

What it's like to live here

The mainland — roughly the area along US-1 between the Indian River and I-95 — is where most of Vero Beach's everyday life happens. This is where you'll find the larger grocery stores, big-box retail, medical offices, and the bulk of the rental housing stock. It's practical, affordable, and well-connected. The beach is a 10–15 minute drive east across the bridge.

Walkability

Low to moderate. The mainland is car-oriented, with larger lots and commercial strips. Some pockets near US-1 have walkable amenities, but most daily errands require driving.

Bikeability

Moderate in select areas. Some bike lanes exist along US-1 and major roads, but cycling infrastructure is less developed than the barrier island. Suitable for recreational riding.

Beach Distance

10–15 minute drive to the nearest beach access via the Merrill P. Barber Bridge or 17th Street Bridge.

Rent Range

$1,200–$1,800/mo for 1–2 bedroom apartments

Neighborhood FAQ

Vero Beach Mainland
renter questions

Is mainland Vero Beach a good place to rent?

The mainland is the most affordable area in Vero Beach, with rents typically 20–30% lower than the barrier island. You get more space, easier parking, and proximity to shopping, the hospital, and FAU. The beach is just a 10–15 minute drive east.

What is the commute from mainland Vero Beach to the beach?

The drive from the mainland to the beach takes 10–15 minutes via the Merrill P. Barber Bridge or 17th Street Bridge. Traffic is rarely an issue, even during peak season. Many mainland residents visit the beach daily without any commute stress.

Are there apartments near Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital?

Yes. The hospital at 1000 36th Street is in the heart of the mainland. North Crane Living manages properties within a 5–10 minute drive. We also work with traveling nurses on flexible lease terms. See our Cleveland Clinic housing guide for details.
